The Wonderful World of Vogue Fabrics

Well, we just finished our annual warehouse sale. Thanks to all of you who joined us to take advantage of all our specials. We are always excited to host an event at the warehouse. Not being open to the public really weighs on us for one main reason, we don't get to see the excitement and fascination that comes with sewers seeing our fabrics. Sure, we get to see the fabrics first when they come out of the box or when I buy them from a sample. Sure, we say to each other "That's a nice piece", when we are processing the fabrics from a designer room lot I bought from NY. But, we don't ever know what the end use is. We miss all the creative happenings and excited banter between ASG members, all the conversations between dressmaker and client, and We miss the soft toned bickering between future brides and their Mothers. Twice a year the buyer and sellers of fabric join together at the RIO in Las Vegas. It is a very quick two and a half day show. Being from the Midwest, we don't get a lot of chances to meet with our West Coast vendors. I always look forward to going, and catching up with our vendors. Many of them have become close family friends. So, I have packed the VFBM fabric samples (the incomplete pages) in hopes of finding that perfect match to complete the page. I also have my wish list for the upcoming Sales Events at the retail stores, and I am always on the look out for that something special. Wish me luck. I have been warned that we will be bringing the video camera with us. So, I'll have to be on my best behavior, and maybe we will even do a couple of impromtu interviews so you can meet some of the great people that make Vogue Fabrics so great. Thursday, Alexander Vezina, the company's CEO, confirmed the 30,000 square-foot store at 136 Howard St. will likely close by the beginning of November. For the past several days, shoppers perused merchandise, grabbing discounted balls of yarn in a variety of hues or marked-down sewing machines. Vezina attributed the closing to the sagging economy. He said Fabric Place saw a drop in sales of about 3-5 percent two years ago. This year he called the decrease, "a bit more dramatic." With the company dissolving and closing its Framingham and Woburn Mall locations, about 150 workers will lose their jobs. "We encountered soft sales in a very difficult economy. I think furniture stores ... and fabric stores are failing," said Vezina. He said the company concluded it would be...

"This writer is all about fashion and sewing, so she was tickled fuschia to see Burdastyle's How-To series launched at one of her favorite New York store, Mood Fabrics (the place where you see the Project Runway designers getting their materials). While Mood Fabrics is so generous with their swatches you could actually make something to wear with them, we feel that this store is a tad bit over-rated and over-priced. You can get the same experience at other fabric stores, such as Vogue Fabrics in Evanston, Ill. Did you know that store owners there gladly welcome group tours (this writer went on one the other day and was thrilled to bits and pieces with her goody bag)? Another big independent fabric store has closed. Rogie and I were talking today about their closing. I hate to see things like this happen. I don't necessarily mind the Walmart, JoAnn's, and Hancock's closing stores. I don't like the layoffs and good people losing their jobs. But as fabric supply companies, they really miss the mark when it comes to fashion fabrics and supporting sewing and home grown fashion. I hate seeing the independents go out though. It troubles me. The independents are the central point for home sewers to really find those fabrics that make it worth while to sew.
